Jewell M. Chapman, 90, of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away Sunday, January 16, 2022, at Wellsville Retirement Community. Private services will be held. Interment Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Jewell was born Friday, June 12, 1931, in Ottawa, the daughter of Levi G. and Lennie Bell (Henderson) Mealman. She was a lifelong Ottawa resident. Jewell attended Ottawa High School, later earning a General Education Development degree. On July 11, 1948, Jewell was united in marriage with Kenneth Eugene Chapman at Ottawa, Kansas. He preceded her in death on September 12, 2003. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Levi and Lennie Bell Mealman; son, Stephen L. Chapman; brothers, Robert Mealman and Kenneth Mealman, Sr.; sisters, Arcile “Pat” Donaldson and Wanda Altic; and grandsons, Christopher Sheldon and Eric Chapman. Survivors include her children, Kenneth “Kenny” Chapman of Ottawa, Claudia Seaton and her husband, Gene of Ottawa, Gloria Newman and her husband, Jim of Evergreen, Colorado, Sheryl Stephenson and her husband, Dana of Ottawa, Toni Schmidt and her husband, A.J. of Ottawa, and Kirt Chapman of Ottawa; twelve grandchildren, many great grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and daughter-in-law, Carol Chapman. Jewell also worked eight years for Parmalee Products; eighteen years for Bendix King as a Class C Radio Tech; five years of evenings and weekends at McDonalds; three years for Chartwells Food Service at Ottawa University and part-time for four years at Our Own Hardware, also in Ottawa. She attended Faith Lutheran Church; was a Life Member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Memorial Post #5901 Auxiliary, Christian Ladies Club, Eastern Star, True Kindred, White Shrine, Beauceant, American Legion Auxiliary; served three years as secretary for the Franklin County Veterans’ Memorial Committee, serving as 2nd Vice President in 2004 and 1st Vice president in 2005 and as president of Lions Club 2006-2007. Jewell enjoyed playing piano and organ, crocheting and cross stitch and shopping with her daughters, having meals and good times with her family.
