Jerry Lee Turner was born August 19, 1944, at Ottawa, Kansas. He was the son of Floyd and Ruth (Armstrong) Turner. Jerry was raised in Ottawa. He also lived in Pleasanton; Emporia, from 1984 to 1987; Manattan, 1985 to 1987; and, Topeka, 1987 to 1994. He moved to Ozawkie, Kansas, in 1994, where he made his home until his death Thursday, September 4, 2003, at the age of fifty-nine years. He attended San Diego High School and later earned his G.E.D. Jerry served in the United States Navy from August 21, 1961, to February 14, 1964. He was career Kansas Army National Guard for thirty years, attaining the rank of Staff Sgt., retiring on July 31, 1997. He enlisted on August 21, 1972, and earned medals and citations including Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Noncommissioned Officer's Professional Development Ribbon with Numeral 3, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and Marksman Marksmanship Qualification Badge with Rifle Bar. He was a member of American Legion Ozawkie Post #225. Jerry was quite a handyman and enjoyed tinkering in his shop, where his specialty was woodworking. He also enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid fisherman. His greatest joy, however, came from his family and spending time with his grandchildren. On May 29, 1964, Jerry was united in marriage with Pauline Wills at Ottawa, Kansas. She survives of their home. He is also survived by two daughters, Tammy Achten and her husband, Curtis, of Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, Krystina Turner, of the home; daughter-in-law, Charmin Turner, of Topeka, Kansas; and, four grandchildren, Tori Turner, Ciara Turner, Jessica Turner, and Joshua Baggett. He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Terry L. Turner, in 1993; and, five brothers, Lyle E. Newlan, Wade L. Newlan, Dale R. Newlan, Merle E. Newlan, and Larry Dean Turner. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from the Dengel & Son Mortuary 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 9, 2003. IN STATE: Mr. Turner will lie in state at the Dengel & Son Mortuary after 1:00 p.m. Sunday to the service hour. CEMETERY: Highland Cemetery, Ottawa, Kansas, with Military Honors by Adjutant Generals Ceremonial Platoon, Kansas Army National Guard.
