Jeanette Helen Bien was born Tuesday, July 5, 1927, in Cayuga, North Dakota, the daughter of Edward and Agnes (Pieterick) Slaby. Jeanette lived in Portland, Oregon, moving to Ottawa, in Franklin County, Kansas, in 1946, where she made her home, until her death Monday, August 1, 2005, at the age of seventy-eight years. She attended high school in Cayuga, North Dakota. In the early 1940's, during World War II, she worked in the San Diego, California shipyards. In the 1950's, she was employed as a seamstress for Mode O'Day; early 1960's, seamstress for H. D. Lee; and in the late 1960's, worked on the production line for Platner Industries, all of Ottawa. From 1971 to 1986, she helped with her husband's body shop in Ottawa, known as Bienie's. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post #5901 Auxiliary, of Ottawa. Jeanette loved spending time with her family and visiting with her many friends. She enjoyed the outdoors, and liked to travel, fish, work in the garden, and take care of her flowers. She also enjoyed playing cards. Jeanette met LeRoy D. Bien in Fargo, North Dakota in 1943, while LeRoy was in the Navy. In January of 1946, Jeanette and LeRoy were united in marriage at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ottawa. They were devoted members of the Church for all of their fifty-nine years of marriage. LeRoy survives of their home. She is also survived by her daughter, Bonnie Coffman and her husband, Carl, of Wellsville, Kansas; five sons, Rick Bien of Ottawa, Tim Bien and his wife, Rosemary, of Pomona, Kansas, James Bien and his wife, Nancy, of Ottawa, Aaron Bien and his wife, Cindy, of Olathe, Kansas, Charles Bien and his wife, Frida, of Sacramento, California; fourteen grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Bien is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Ruth Slaby. SERVICES: A Funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ottawa 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 5, 2005. OFFICIATING CLERGY: Fr. Gerald E. Sheeds. IN STATE: Mrs. Bien has been cremated. A Rosary will be said at 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Dengel & Son Mortuary, followed by a family visitation from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. CEMETERY: Inurnment at a later date at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Ottawa.
