Jean Black

Jean Black, 82, of Ottawa, passed away Thursday, July 12, 2018, at Richmond Healthcare & Rehabilitation. Mrs. Black will lie in state from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M., Sunday, July 15, 2018 at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Family will meet with friends from 9:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M., Monday, July 16, 2018 at the funeral home. Funeral services will immediately follow at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Interment at Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Jean was born on September 28, 1935 in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Elmer and Willie “Billie” (Peatte) Burton. She grew up in Linn County, Kansas moving in 1956 to Garnett. In 1960, Jean moved to Ottawa. She graduated from Pleasanton High School, Pleasanton, Kansas. Jean was united in marriage to Freddie L. Black June 3, 1952 in Pleasanton. He preceded her in death on July 12, 2007. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Billie Burton; infant sister; and half-brother, Wayne Simpson. Survivors include her two sons, Lyle Black and wife Cheryl of Ottawa, and Larry Black and wife Jeanne of Baldwin City; five grandchildren, Angie Hook, Betsy Hedges, Casey Black, Emily Clark and Eric Black; eight great-grandchildren. Jean was employed as a Crop Survey Analyst for the Kansas Department of Agriculture and as an insurance agent for American Family Insurance. She was a member of the Ottawa Church of the Nazarene. Jean enjoyed traveling, crafts, gardening and farming. The family suggests memorial contributions to Crossroads Hospice or the Alzheimer’s Association c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S.
