Janie M. Smith, age 89, of Wellsville, Kansas, died Wednesday, March 17, 2010, at Wellsville Manor Care Center in Wellsville, Kansas. She was born on Tuesday, October 26, 1920, in Ottawa, Kansas. She was the daughter of William and Cecilia (Hazlett) Harkins. RESIDENCE HISTORY: She was a long time Franklin County, Kansas resident, moving to Wellsville in 2001. She had also lived in Princeton and Shawnee, Kansas. EDUCATION: She graduated from Neosho County Community College with an LPN Degree. OCCUPATION & BUSINESS: She was an LPN for Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa for twenty-six years. MEMBERSHIPS: She was in charge of Red Cross Blood Drives for many years. MARRIAGE: On January 11, 1936, Janie was united in marriage with Clarence R. “Bud” Kirkland in Garnett, Kansas. He preceded her in death on June 14, 1962. On December 20, 1966, Janie was united in marriage with Francis “Lee” Smith in Ottawa, Kansas. He preceded her in death in 1981. SERVICES: Funeral Services will be held at Dengel & Son Mortuary in Ottawa at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 19, 2010. IN STATE: Mrs. Smith will lie in state at the Dengel & Son Mortuary after 1:00 p.m. Thursday to the service hour, where the family will meet with friends from 7:00 to 8:00 Thursday evening.
