Janice M. Guthrie

Janice Marie 'Jan' Guthrie was born August 26, 1952, at Leavenworth, Kansas. She was the daughter of Florence (Cooley) Prins. She lived in Lawrence for two years, moving to Ottawa, in Franklin County, Kansas in 1975, where she made her home until her death Wednesday, November 21, 2001, at the age of forty-nine years. Janice graduated from Tonganoxie (Kansas) High School with the class of 1970. In 1991, she graduated from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, and 1994, University of Kansas School of Law with a Juris Doctorate. She was currently a research attorney for Kansas Supreme Court in Topeka, where she had been employed since 1997. From 1994 to 1997, she was Associate Director for the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence, in Topeka. Janice attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Ottawa. She served on the Board, and was President Elect, of the Women's Transitional Care Service in Lawrence. She was a excellent seamstress and enjoyed quilting and craft work. She made many beautiful hand-sewn items which her family will treasure through the years. Jan was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, who, more than anything, enjoyed being with her family. On August 6, 1970, Janice was united in marriage with Mike Guthrie at Tonganoxie, Kansas. He survives of their home. Also, surviving are her mother, Florence Prins of Leavenworth; four daughters, Prudence Fisher and her husband, Tom, of Las Vegas, Nevada, Priscilla Carter and her husband, Robert, of Ottawa, Deloris Riemer and her husband, Chancy, of Ottawa, Patricia Jackson and her husband, Jeff, of Pomona; brother, Bruce Smock and his wife, Frances, of Leavenworth; two sisters, Dayle Yantzi and her husband, Dave, of Platte City, Missouri, Cindy Kloster and her husband, Ralph, of Platte City, Missouri; three granddaughters, Taelor Carter, Myranda Carter, Talya Carter; and, grandson, Eli Fisher. Visitation, Sunday, November 25, 2001, from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Services will be held Monday, November 26, 2001, at 10:00 AM at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Rev. Francis Stockton will be officiating. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery on Monday, November 26, 2001
