Jane Matzkanin, age 89, of Louisburg, KS, died Sunday, June 26, 2011 at the Louisburg Care Center. Jane was born April 13, 1922 in Omaha, Nebraska, the daughter of Joseph Smith and Elsie Deniston. She graduated from Paseo High School and attended Kansas State University and was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. She attended Medical Technical Training at Saint Luke"s Hospital Kansas City, MO. After training she moved to San Antonio, TX to work at the base hospital. This is where she met her husband Theodore Matzkanin and they were married on February 14, 1946. They moved to Overland Park, KS to raise their three children, later moving to Louisburg, KS in 1974. Jane was very active in Girl Scouting and was past President of the Overland Park PTA. She was active in the Extension Home Unit (E.H.U. Club) and she worked as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for several years. She and Ted traveled extensively with the Wally Byam Caravan Club International Kansas City Unit (WBCCI). She loved spending time with horses and was an avid photographer. She was preceded in death by her husband Theodore Matzkanin. Survivors include her daughter, Carol Keffer of Louisburg; son, Gary Matzkanin of Grand Junction, CO; son, Randy Matzkanin and wife, Marsha, of Mountain View, CA; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Matzkanin will lie in state from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 1, 2011 at the Penwell-Gabel Louisburg Chapel with a Graveside service following at 10:00 a.m. at the Louisburg Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 9, 2011 at the First Christian Church of Louisburg. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church.
