James "Jim" A. Richardson

James A. Jim Richardson, age 87, of Ottawa, Kansas, died Tuesday, October 6, 2009. He was born on Tuesday, May 2, 1922, in Ottawa. He was the son of Elmer and Beulah (Weien) Richardson. He was a long time resident of Ottawa, moving from Ft. Scott, Kansas. Jim graduated from Ottawa High School and attended Ottawa University. He worked for the Sunflower Ammunition Plant in De Soto, Kansas; Ottawa Sheriff’s Department as an Undersheriff; Deputy for Paola Sheriff’s Department; and retired from the Ottawa Department of Public Safety as Sgt. of Communications. Jim served in the United States Army from May 2, 1940, to October 19, 1945, during World War II, with the 195th Field Artillery Battalion. He was a carbine sharpshooter and field lineman serving during battles and campaigns including Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe, earning the rank of Sgt. He received decorations and citations including the Good Conduct Medal and American Defense Service Ribbon. He retired from the Army National Guard as a Major. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post #5901, Ottawa, and Ottawa Lions Club. On Sunday, January 12, 1947, Jim was united in marriage with Hazel Williams in Ft. Scott, Kansas. She preceded him in death on July 12, 2009. Survivours include: Son-Dennis L. Richardson of Ottawa, Kansas Daughter-Debra Rogers & her husband, Jed, of Austin, Texas Daughter-Pamela J. Davis of Clayton, Oklahoma Son-Brian K. Richardson of Ottawa, Kansas Sister-Carolyn Comstock of California Sister-Lamae Mock of Texas Grandchildren-Eight Gt.Grandchildren-Eight He is preceded in death by: Wife-Hazel (Williams) Richardson Parents-Elmer and Beulah (Weien) Richardson Daughter-Carolyn Tersiner SERVICES: Graveside Inurnment Services will be held at the Ft. Scott National Cemetery, in Ft. Scott, Kansas at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13, 2009. IN STATE: Family will meet with friends from 7:00 to 8:00 Monday evening at Dengel & Son Mortuary in Ottawa. CEMETERY: Ft. Scott National Cemetery in Ft. Scott, Kansas. MEMORIALS: The family suggests memorial contributions to Franklin County Diabetes Association, c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
