James H. “Jim” Coombes, 89, of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away Saturday, September 25, 2021, at Delmar Gardens, Lenexa. A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at 3:00 P.M., Thursday, October 7, 2021, at Dengel & Son Mortuary, Ottawa. Family will meet with friends immediately following. A rosary will be said at 2:00 P.M. Jim was born February 16, 1932, in Ottawa, the son of James D. and Mary E. (Hawkins) Coombes. He was a lifelong Ottawa, Kansas resident. On March 12, 1956, Jim was united in marriage to Marjorie Jane “Marge” Hughes. She preceded him in death on October 1, 1991. Jim was united in marriage to Janice Marie Welch July 25, 1992, in Ottawa. She preceded him in death on July 19, 2021. Jim was employed as a track welder with Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway for 25 years, retiring in 1994. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and former member of the Community Foursquare Church, both of Ottawa. Jim enjoyed buying and selling antiques, singing and performing at nursing homes. He also enjoyed listening to country music. He was also preceded in death by his parents, James and Mary Coombes; stepfather Perry Franks; son Leonard Bickerstaff; daughter Debra Chambell; one brother and eight sisters; and grandson Casey Lloyd. Survivors include six children, Jackie Garrison of Wichita, John Bickerstaff of Willis, North Dakota, Lonnie Schultz of Pomona, Jay (Sonja) Coombes of Lenexa, Vicki L. (Guss) Lloyd of Claremore, Oklahoma, and Becki Teter of Garnett; sixteen grandchildren, many great grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorial contributions to Delmar Gardens Activity Fund c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
