Jack Willis Angell, Sr., 80, Richmond, died Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, at Olathe Medical Center in Olathe. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. He was born Jan. 19, 1929, in Elora, Ontario, Canada, to George H. and Doris (Mosure) Angell. He was a resident of Richmond Care Center since 2008, moving there from Ottawa. He spent his youth in Ontario, Canada and moved to California in the late 1940s. After his marriage he lived in Garnett, and later Ft. Scott and Phoenix, Ariz. He returned to Kansas in 1997 following his wife’s death. He attended schools in Canada. He was employed as a stock clerk by the Van DeKamps Bakery in Los Angeles when he moved to California from Canada. When he lived in Anderson County he was employed by his father-in-law as a welder at Joe’s Welding Shop. In the late 1950s, he and his wife owned and operated the Dairy Queen and Connie’s Carryout in Ft. Scott. He was later employed by Greyhound Bus Line in Arizona driving the Phoenix to Las Vegas route for many years. He later was a landlord in Phoenix prior to his retirement in 1997. He was a Korean War veteran. On Aug. 22, 1950, he enlisted in the United States Army and served until Aug. 21, 1953 with the 987th Armored Field Artillery Battalion. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. He was a past Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post #5901 of Ottawa and was a fifty-plus year member of the Delphian Masonic Lodge #44 of Garnett. He was a former member of the Scottish Rite of Lawrence. He loved being with his family and his friends from the V.F.W. He was an artistic painter and an avid fan of ice hockey. He married Connie Nadine Humbert On Flag Day in 1952 at Greeley. She preceded him in death in 1997. They shared 45 years of marriage. Survivors include one son, Jack W. Angell, Jr. and his wife Zena, Phoenix, Ariz., one daughter, Doris Suzanne “Sue” Lesniak and her husband John, Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters, Betty Corfield, Sun City, Ariz., and Peggy Stark, Canada; four grandchildren, Jason Lesniak, Allison Lesniak, Kristin Lesniak, and Jessica Badilla and her husband Mike; and one great-grandaughter, Rhiana Badilla. He was preceded in death by his parents and several siblings. He was cremated. Family will meet with friends following services. Military Honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post #5901 of Ottawa, Kansas. Private inurnment will take place at a later date in Garnett Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be sent to V.F.W.
