Jack F. Sauer

Jack F. Sauer, 93, of Olathe, Kansas, formerly of Ottawa, passed away Monday, July 24, 2017. The funeral mass will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, July 29, 2017, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The rosary will be said at 6:30 P.M., Friday, July 28, 2017, at Dengel & Son Mortuary with a visitation to follow at 7:00 P.M. Inurnment Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Ottawa, with military honors by the United States Navy. Jack was born Tuesday, October 30, 1923, in Humboldt, Kansas, the son of Frederick and Gladys (Patch) Sauer. He lived in Ottawa for 67 years moving to Olathe where he has lived for the last 3 ½ years. He graduated from Humboldt High School with the class of 1941. Jack served his country in the United States Navy during World War II from March 1943 to February 1946, in the Pacific Theater, attaining the rank of Yeoman 3rd class. Jack was united in marriage to Juliann Lickteig May 8, 1946, in Ottawa. She survives of the home. He was employed as a salesman for Underwood Equipment selling John Deere (the Cadillac of) farm equipment for thirty-four years, retiring in 1990. He was a member of Saint Paul's Parish, Olathe, former member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Ottawa, and a former member of Sacred Heart Council 3018, Knights of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Dean Sauer and Bobby Sauer; and a brother and sister who died in infancy. Other survivors include his five children, Jack Sauer of Olathe, Kansas, Michael Sauer of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Nancy Abbott of Centennial, Colorado, Mary Ready and husband Dean of Tonganoxie, Kansas, and Kimberly D’Espies of Pompano Beach, Florida; sister-in-law, Donna Sauer (wife of Dean) of Ottawa, Kansas; five grandchildren, nine great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Jack always looked forward to family get-togethers, especially family reunions where he would show off his horseshoe tossing abilities. He loved being with his grandchildren and going down to "the farm" and visiting with the entire Lickteig and Scheckel families. He also enjoyed his job, and fishing and hunting as often as possible.
