Jack Charles Haas was born August 15, 1921, at Kansas City, Kansas. He was the son of Charles W. and Flora K. (Launer) Haas. For several years, Mr. Haas lived in Lawrence, Kansas, before moving to Ottawa, in Franklin County, Kansas in 1963, where he made his home until his death Saturday, May 18, 2002, at the age of eighty years. Jack attended Lawrence High School. From the mid 1960's to his retirement in 1986, he was co-owner and operator of Weidner Mobil Oil Service Station on 15th & Main St., in Ottawa. For many years, he was a car salesman at Crystal Motors, Lawrence, Kansas. He served in the United States Army during WWII in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operations as a heavy equipment operator and sharpshooter. Mr. Haas was a former member of the First Christian Church of Lawrence and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post # 5901, Ottawa. Jack was an outdoorsman, who especially enjoyed camping and fishing. He loved traveling to Texas for the winter months and, most of all, spending time with his family and grandchildren. On January 7, 1939, Jack was united in marriage with Myrtle V. Fairbanks at Lawrence, Kansas. She survives of their home. He is also survived by his son, Bob Haas and his wife, Connie, of Ottawa; daughter, Shirley Jones, of Ottawa; three brothers, Lloyd Haas and his wife, Karen, of Lawrence, Floyd Haas, of St. Louis, Missouri, Bill Haas and his wife, Irma, of Iola; sister, Thelma Wymore and her husband, Leonard, of Johnson, Tennessee; two grandchildren, Vicki Draucker, Richard Cheek; and, four great-grandchildren, Carly Brown, Amanda Cheek, Jacob Cheek, Chelsea Draucker. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Bobby D. Haas. Services: Family and friends will meet at Highland Cemetery, Ottawa, Kansas 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 21, 2002 for graveside services. Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post # 5901, Ottawa, Kansas will hold military honors. In State: Mr. Haas will lie in state at the Dengel & Son Mortuary from 1:00 PM Monday to Noon Tuesday where the family will meet with friends from 7 to 8 Monday evening. Cemetery: Highland Cemetery, Ottawa, Kansas. Memorials: The family suggests memorial contributions to Alzheimer`s Association or the Life Care Center of Osawatomie c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, Ottawa, Kansas.
