Irma Mae Sassaman, 94, of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, August 2, 2023 at Homestead of Eudora.
Family will meet with friends at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 19, 2023, at Dengel and Son, Ottawa Chapel. An inurnment will be held at noon, following the service at Overbrook Cemetery, Overbrook Kansas.
Irma was born Friday, November 2, 1928, at Overbrook, Kansas, the daughter of Homer “Tom” and Dorcus (Kelley) Bachelor.
She lived in Lawrence, Kansas from 1972 until moving to Ottawa in 2007.
She graduated from Appanoose High School in 1946.
Irma was united in marriage with Joseph A. Sassaman on December 22, 1946, at Michigan Valley, Kansas. He preceded her in death on October 9, 1972. On November 2, 2007, she was united in marriage with Roy I. Courtney.
She was one of the first women to sell cars. She sold cars from 1971 until 1986 and worked seven years as a sales secretary for the Kansas Department of Transportation, retiring in November of 2006; then worked five years for Mitchell Flooring.
Irma loved quilting, bargain hunting, flowers, and dancing. She especially loved her children and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Joseph; daughter Nancy Miller; son Stephen Sassaman; brothers Bill Bachelor and Don Bachelor; sisters Betty Bachelor and Norma Lee Starkebaum.
Survivors include her loving daughters Marcia Sassaman of DeSoto, Kansas, Lea Boyce of Ottawa, Kansas, and Penny Sassaman of Lawrence, Kansas; ten grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren.
