Ida S. Sands, age 105, of Ottawa, Kansas, died Monday, October 1, 2012 at Ottawa Retirement Village. She was born on Thursday, March 28, 1907 in Prairie Home, Missouri, the daughter of Karl M. and Caroline Barbara (Schilb) Seifert. She attended schools in Otterville, Missouri. She lived in De Soto, Kansas for eleven years before moving to rural Ottawa in 1978. She previously lived in Aurora, Missouri. Ida was a homemaker. She was ordained as an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church in Ottawa in 1981. When the church closed, she transferred her membership to Westminster Presbyterian Church in 1987. She was active in United Presbyterian Women, and was also a member of Union Chapter #15, Order of the Eastern Star of Ottawa and Past Matron of the Aurora Lodge. She raised butterflies, painted numerous paintings and wrote poetry. On September 12, 1925 Ida was united in marriage with James Robert Bob Sands at Sedalia, Missouri. He preceded her in death on March 25, 1983. They enjoyed fifty-seven years of marriage. She is survived by two sons, Ronald R. Sands and his wife, Carol, of Ottawa, Kansas and Robert E. Sands and his partner, Betty Tong, of Costa Mesa, California; two daughters, Melva Sweetwood of Edgerton, Kansas and Barbara Curry of Corvalis, Oregon; daughter-in-law, Betty Sands of Ottawa, Kansas; nine grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and ten great-great grandchildren. Ida was also preceded in death by a son, Merle L. Sands and her parents, Karl M. and Caroline B. Seifert; four sisters and six brothers; two sons-in-law, Bud Sweetwood and Chuck Curry, a granddaughter, Cheryl Sweetwood, and a grandson, Terry Sands. Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 5, 2012 at Peoria Cemetery. Friends may pay their respectsto Mrs. Sands 1:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday at Dengel & Son Mortuary.
