Homer Evert Brown was born Wednesday, March 29, 1916, at his home in the Centropolis, Kansas area. He was the son of Orville E. and Maude (Anglemyer) Brown. A lifelong resident, Homer made his home in Ottawa, Franklin County, Kansas, until his death Friday, July 22, 2005, at the age of eighty-nine years. He attended Ottawa schools. He worked twenty-seven years as a clerk and carrier for the United States Post Office. Earlier, he hauled milk for Walter Woods and Bennett's and was a grocery store clerk for Duke Chaney, all in Ottawa. Homer served during World War II from March 2, 1942, until December 31, 1945, in the 114th Field Artillery of the United States Army attaining the rank of Technician Fourth Class. He participated in campaigns in New Guinea and Southern Philippines and received the American Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, World War II Victory Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Memorial Post #5901 in Ottawa. One of Homer's hobbies was upholstering, which he was quite an expert in. He was also quite a gardener, which he did mostly for his wife. Homer was a devoted family man and loving husband, who took such good care of Doris. When their boys were kids, he enjoyed taking them fishing. He also enjoyed taking trips to Branson and, in his younger days, loved to go roller skating. On October 29, 1950, Homer was united in marriage with Doris Jean Hoffman in Ottawa. They celebrated fifty-five years of marriage. She survives of their home. He is also survived by two sons, Galen E. Brown and his wife, Darla, of Pomona, Kansas, Richard L. 'Homer' Brown of Ottawa, Kansas; and five grandchildren, Cori Brown of Olathe, Kansas, Marilyn Hobbs of Vilsix, Germany, Caleb Tatro of Satanta, Kansas; Hunter Thompson, and Dustin Thompson, both of Pomona, Kansas. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Ruth Brown, and infant sister, Eileen Brown. SERVICES: Graveside services will be held from Highland Cemetery in Ottawa at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 26, 2005. IN STATE: Friends may pay their respects to Mr. Brown after 1:00 p.m. Monday at Dengel & Son Mortuary to service hour, where the family will meet with friends 7 to 8:00 Monday evening.
