Herbert S. 'Herb' Parkin, was born on Wednesday, August 28, 1929, in Admire, Kansas. He was the son of John Henry and Theresa L.L. (Wagg) Parkin. While a child, Herb lived in Ottawa, Kansas, later moving to Pomona, Kansas, where he made his home until his death on Thursday, October 23, 2008, at the age of seventy-nine years. Herb mined with his father and brothers. Later on, he worked for the railroad. Then moving on in years, he became a carpenter and worked out of the local unions in Lawrence and Kansas City. He was always ready to lend a helping hand with the farm and cattle for his family. He enjoyed animals of all sorts, especially the wildlife at his house. He served his country in the United States Army from August 1955 until October of 1956. Herb enjoyed hunting, fishing, anything to do with being outside. He enjoyed visiting with the ones who stopped by and would always give advice to those in need. Herb was a hard worker and a good uncle to his nieces and nephews. He is survived by his sister, Theresa Ann Shepheard of Ottawa and many nieces and nephews. Herb is preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers, John H. 'Sonny' Parkin, Harry 'Tom' Parkin, and Coburn W. 'Cobe' Parkin. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from the Dengel & Son Mortuary 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 28, 2008. IN STATE: Mr. Parkin will lie in state at the Dengel & Son Mortuary after 11:00a.m. Monday to the service hour where the family will meet with friends 7 to 8 Monday evening.
