Herbert M. “Herb” Courter, 72, of Wellsville, Kansas passed away Sunday, December 27, 2020, peacefully at his home with loved ones by his side. Cremation is planned, and a celebration of life will be held later. Herb was born Friday, February 13, 1948 at Ottawa, Kansas, the son of Wilford O. and Esther Mae (Davis) Courter. He was a lifelong Wellsville resident and attended Rock Creek Community School and Wellsville schools. Herb served in the United States Marine Corps from April 23, 1968 until April 4, 1974 during Vietnam, attaining the rank of Lance Corporal. In Edgerton, Kansas, Herbert helped build a church where he was united in marriage to Theresa D. (Elliott) Harn and her three children on July 14, 1989 and they became a well-blended family. Theresa survives of their home. Other survivors include their children, Rodney W. Courter; Amanda Harn; Levi (Kendell) Harn and Lance (Heidi) Harn; and seven grandchildren, Caleb and Jade Courter, Elijah, Emily, Ian, Nora and Hudson Harn. Other survivors include Gena Ott, Jeff Courter, Leanard Courter and their families along with Cindy, Allen, Mark and Derek Elliott and their families. Herb was preceded in death by his parents, Wilford and Esther Courter; brother Robert Courter; and sister-in-law, Nancy Courter. Throughout his life, Herb worked at Standard Oil Company, Continental Can, Sunflower Ammunition Plant, Wheat Harvest Crew Cross Kansas, the oil field, and was an over-the-road truck driver for twenty years, retiring in 2008. Herb enjoyed camping, fishing, traveling, riding motorcycles, helping on the family farm, and having coffee with the men at the café. He will be missed deeply by his wife, family and all that knew and loved him.
