Helen Mary Hogan, 78, of Garnett, KS, died Thursday, February 28, 2002 at Menorah Medical Center in Overland Park, KS. SERVICES: A Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 4, 2002, at St. Patrick`s Catholic Church, Emerald Community. OFFICIANT: Fr. Michael Hawken. IN STATE: Mrs. Hogan will lie in state at the Dengel & Son Mortuary after 1:00 p.m. Saturday and 1:00 p.m. Sunday, where a prayer service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Sunday, followed by a family visitation at 6:30. CEMETERY: St. Patrick`s Cemetery, Emerald Community. MEMORIALS: Memorial contributions may be made to the Emerald Cemetery Fund or American Diabetes Association, c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas, 66067. Helen was born August 22, 1923, at Madison, Kansas, in southern Lyon County. She was the daughter of Anthony Joseph and Marie Agnes (Hellmer) Burenheide. Helen grew up in Lyon County, close to Olpe, Kansas. She lived in Emporia until her marriage in 1948, moving to Garnett, in Anderson County, Kansas, where she made her home until her death Thursday, February 28, 2002, at the age of seventy-eight years. She passed away following heart surgery and thirty-one days of intensive care at Menorah Medical Center. She graduated from St. Joseph High School in Olpe, Kansas, with the class of 1940. Helen was a lifelong homemaker. She was a member of St. Patrick`s Catholic Church at Emerald; the Altar Society, holding each of the offices over the years; Confraterity of Christian Doctrine teacher; the Harris Progressive Unit of the Extension Homemakers, taking part in all executive activities; and, volunteered for the blood bank. Helen created many lovely hand-made items. She enjoyed crocheting, making several prize-winning afghans she had entered in the fairs. She also enjoyed embroidery and quilting. On November 23, 1948, Helen was united in marriage with Edwin Francis Ed Hogan at Olpe, Kansas. He preceded her in death December 24, 1992. Her parents and sister, Jeanette Soldani, also precede her in death. Helen is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Myla Hogan of Williamsburg, Tom and Lisa Hogan of Cimarron, Dan and Alma Hogan of Olathe, Don and Rhonda Hogan of Emporia; three sisters, Theresa Cozad of Osage City, Martha Jane Mitsven and her husband, Wally, of Shawnee Mission; three brothers, Harold Burenheide and his wife, Connie, of Emporia, George Burenheide and his wife, Jo, of Topeka, Clarence Burenheide and his wife, Mary Gayle, of Emporia; and, seven grandchildren, Erin and Ryan Hogan of Olathe, Cassandra, Lesli and Kyle Hogan of Emporia, Abbygail and Gretchen Hogan of Cimarron.
