Helen Marie Hasler, 90, of Ottawa, passed away Thursday, January 10, 2019, at Rock Creek of Ottawa. Funeral mass will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, January 18, 2019 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Mrs. Hasler will lie in state from 1:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M., Thursday, January 17, 2019 at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Interment Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Helen was born July 31, 1928 in Anderson County, Kansas, the daughter of Steve and Rose (Nilges) Ferns. She moved as a child with her family to New Mexico; lived for a short time in Wichita and lived about forty years in Oklahoma after her marriage before moving to Ottawa in 1987. She attended schools in Roswell, New Mexico and graduated from high school in Wichita, Kansas. Helen was united in marriage to Charles D. Hasler September 14, 1946, at Wichita, Kansas. He preceded her in death on April 24, 1987. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Steve and Rose Ferns; son, Howard D. Hasler; brothers, Joe Ferns and Lawrence “Bud” Ferns; and sisters, Mary Hix, Rosa Roberts, Theresa Davis and Luella “Lue” Buhman. Survivors include son, Harvey Hasler and wife Vicky of Bozeman, Montana; grandchildren, Robb Ryan Hasler and wife Edmee, Travis Hasler and wife Sami, Chad Hasler and wife Heather, Emmett Hasler, and Emily Lane and husband Ralph; and great grandchildren, Kalum Hasler, Caitlin Hasler, Bailey Hasler, Henry Hasler, and Summer Lane. Helen was a lifelong devoted homemaker. In the 1960’s, Helen was a high school cook for several years. She also helped her husband on their ranch. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Altar Society in Ottawa and while living in Lawrence attended the Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Helen enjoyed volunteering for the church, Hope House, and Franklin County Cancer Foundation.
