Helen Juilette Kingcannon

Helen Juilette Kingcannon was born on Sunday, June 22, 1930, in Alexandria, Louisiana, the daughter of Willie and Edith (Johnson) Glasper. She was a long time resident of Lawrence, Kansas, moving to Ottawa, in Franklin County, Kansas in 1972, where she made her home until her death on Saturday, June 28, 2008, at the age of seventy-eight years. Helen graduated from Peabody High School in Alexandria, Louisiana, with the class of 1948. She attended Tuskegee Institute of Alabama; Leland College in Baker, Louisiana; Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and Grambling College in Ruston, Louisiana. In the 1980's and 1990's, she was a social worker for ten years for Mid-America Council on Aging. In the 1960's, she was a cook for Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity at Kansas University. She was a member of Praise Temple in Lawrence and Counselor of Women's Department of God & Christ Churches. In 1950, Helen was united in marriage with Clarence Jones. They later divorced. In 1968, she was united in marriage with Louis Kingcannon. They later divorced. Helen was very devoted to her ministry work. She enjoyed traveling to many churches for her teaching and preaching. She also greatly enjoyed family gatherings and spending time with her grandchildren. Helen is survived by her daughter, Mary Louise Jones of Lawrence, KS; son, Cornelius Kingcannon and his wife, Jennifer S., of Independence, MO; adopted daughter, Sue Driskill of Ottawa, KS; three stepdaughters, Sharon Jackson and Emma Cushinberry, of Topeka, KS, Mary Durant of Kansas City, MO; three stepsons, Joseph, David and Emmanuel Kingcannon of Topeka, KS; brother, Junius A. Bowman of Phoenix, AZ; three grandchildren, Darrian, Mirshea and Layla Kingcannon; many step grandchildren, step gt.grandchildren, nieces and nephews, including special nieces, Edith Gilbert of Lawrence, KS, Geri Stagg-Moore of Atlanta, GA; and a host of children in Christ. She is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, W. L. Glasper, Jr., Harold B. Stagg; and two stepdaughters, Carol and Annie Kingcannon. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from the Dengel & Son Mortuary in Ottawa at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 3, 2008. IN STATE: Friends may pay their respects to Mrs. Kingcannon at the Dengel & Son Mortuary after 8:30 a.m. Thursday, where the family will meet with friends at 9:00 a.m. prior to the funeral services. INTERMENT: Private family interment will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence, Kansas, at a later date. MEMORIALS: The family suggests memorial contributions to Helen J. Kingcannon Memorial Fund, c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
