Helen Dorothy Rempel was born December 29, 1926, in Franklin County, Kansas. She was the daughter of William Arthur and Hattie (Phinney) Shaffer. A long time resident, Helen made her home in Ottawa, Franklin County, Kansas, until her death Thursday, January 23, 2003, at the age of seventy-six years. She attended Homewood and Williamsburg schools through the ninth grade. In her childhood, she attended the Baptist church. She was a member of the Homewood Friendly Club and the Williamsburg - Ottawa Conservation Club. Helen was a lifelong homemaker. She was a skilled seamstress and, in fact, made most of her own clothes. She also liked to crochet and created many lovely items which will be cherished keepsakes. Helen also enjoyed living in different locations with her husband during his thirty years of construction work. On September 23, 1946, Helen was united in marriage with Walter Kenneth Rempel at Topeka, Kansas. He preceded her in death on March 5, 1998. She is also preceded in death by her parents; brother, William Shaffer, Jr.; and, sister, Georgia Fisher. She is survived by two brothers, Benjamin Shaffer and his wife, Florence, of Great Bend, Kansas, Calvin Shaffer and his wife, Dorothy, of Ottawa; and, three sisters, Sarah Shaffer of Ottawa, Florence Rees and her husband, Larry, of Benton, Iowa, and, Lois Blackburn of Richmond, Kansas. SERVICES: Graveside services will be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Williamsburg, Kansas, 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 27, 2003. IN STATE: Mrs. Rempel will lie in state at the Dengel & Son Mortuary after 5:00 p.m. Saturday to the service hour, where the family will meet with friends from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday. CEMETERY: Mt.
