Hazel Elizabeth Shoemaker, 100, of Ottawa, Kansas passed away Thursday, December 8, 2016, at Ransom Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, December 13, 2016, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Family will meet with friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., Monday, December 12, 2016, at the mortuary. Interment Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Hazel was born Thursday, June 29, 1916, in Vinland, Kansas, the daughter of George and Florence (Chanay) Hoskinson. She lived in Ottawa, for the last 40 years moving here from rural Pomona, where she had lived for many years. She previously lived in Wichita for several years. She graduated from Vinland High School with the class of 1934 and continued her education attending the University of Kansas for 2 years. Hazel was united in marriage to Willard T. Shoemaker August 22, 1936, in Lawrence. He preceded her in death February 25, 1994. She was also preceded in death by her parents, George and Florence Hoskinson; brother, Roy Hoskinson; and grandson, Keenan Shoemaker. Survivors include her son Roger Shoemaker and wife Edith of Williamsburg; granddaughter, Shanna Grant and husband Joey of Fairway; and three great grandchildren, Jack Grant, Wyatt Grant, and Isla Grant. Hazel was employed as a bookkeeper for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, during World War II; a real estate agent for Garvey Real Estate in Wichita from the mid to late 1950s; and Zonker Real Estate also in Wichita from 1959 to 1961. She was also a devoted lifelong homemaker and farm wife. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church receiving her 50 year pin, Ottawa Women’s Bowling Association, Bridge Club, and the Extension Homemakers Unit. Hazel was an avid golfer, KU and Royals fan and loved going to all her children and grandchildren’s events.
