Interment Oak Hill Cemetery, Quenemo, Kansas Harriet was born Sunday, October 30, 1938 in Quenemo, Kansas. She was the youngest of Albert and Hazel (Peterson) Knight’s five children. From those earliest days Harriet cherished her family. She spent most of her childhood in Quenemo and was a graduate of Quenemo High School. On April 28, 1961 she was united in marriage with Charles Gilkey in Harrisonville, Missouri. They spent the majority of their adult lives in Williamsburg where they raised their two sons. Harriet was very proud of her #1 and #2 as she often referred to the boys. Gerald Gilkey and wife Jeannette of Wellington, Kansas and Doyle Gilkey and wife Willi of Garnett, Kansas along with seven grandchildren, Meghan, Remington, Austin, and Matthew Gilkey, Justin, Joshua, and Jeremiah Pate survive. Harriet retired from Bendix King after working many years in both the Ottawa and Lawrence plants. Not being one to sit idle, she soon began working part-time at the Williamsburg Post Office where she enjoyed both her co-workers and customers. Over the years, Harriet spent her extra time bowling, fishing, gardening and squirrel watching. She especially loved to cook and can, sharing often with friends and family. Cooking was one way Harriet expressed her love for others, often trying out new recipes on those she served. Her greatest joy, however, was her grandchildren. She spoiled them every chance she got and loved to spend time with them. Harriet was proceded in death by her husband, parents and siblings. The family suggests memorial contributions to Harriet Gilkey Memorial Fund c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
