Gilbert E. “Stoney” Stoneking, 81, of Pomona, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2016, at Ransom Memorial Hospital. Memorial graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, April 18, 2016, at Woodlawn Cemetery, Pomona. Gilbert was born Tuesday, June 12, 1934, in Baldwin City, Kansas, the son of Peter and Dorothy (Hurrelbrink) Stoneking. He was a lifelong Pomona, Kansas, resident. He graduated from Pomona High School with the class of 1952. Gilbert served in the United States Navy Reserves in the mid 1950’s. Gilbert’s first marriage to Patricia Shaw in 1955, ended in divorce. He married Myrna Crooks in 1969; she preceded him in death in 2005. On February 12, 2009, Gilbert was united in marriage with Cindy (Neal) Bunch in Ottawa. She survives of the home. Other survivors include his five children, Jean Ann Stoneking of Lawrence, Jeffrey D. Stoneking of Pomona, Laury Jane Stoneking of Eudora, J.B. Stoneking of Missouri, and Jayme Worden and husband D.J. of Lawrence; five step children, Jon Horne of Williamsburg, Heather Froggatte and husband Matt also of Williamsburg, David Crooks and wife Martha of Ottawa, Jeff Crooks and wife Sheila of Missouri, and Bob Crooks and wife Ivory of Pomona; sister, Wanda Berger of Pomona; brother, Dick Stoneking of Pomona; brother-in-law, Chris Boggs of Quenemo; sisters-in-law, Kathy Stoneking of Pomona, and Patty Boggs of Quenemo; nineteen grandchildren; many great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Dorothy Stoneking; second wife, Myrna Crooks; and three brothers, David, Gary and Rex Stoneking. Stoney was employed at Bennett’s Creamery, Ottawa in the 1960’s, and Dave’s Conoco, Pomona during the late 1960’s to mid 1970’s. He then began working for West Franklin District 287 driving a school bus and was a maintenance supervisor for nineteen years from 1979 to 1998. He was currently employed for District 287 as a bus driver for the last five years. He was a member of the Pomona Lions Club. Stoney enjoyed walking his dog Little Bit, tinkering in the barn, and was a jack-of-all trades who was always helping people fix things. He loved children, and above all his family.
