Gerald William McGrath was born September 18th, 1899, at Topeka in Shawnee County, Kansas. He was born the son of Matthew and Margaret (McAsey) McGrath. He had moved from Kansas City, Missouri to Hollister in 1994, where he made his home until his death, June 12th, 1997, at the age of ninety-seven years. A long time Franklin County, Kansas resident, he lived in Ottawa from 1930-1954. He then moved to Colorado Springs where he made his home until 1961, at which time he returned to Ottawa where he lived until 1987. He then moved to Pittsburg, Kansas and then to Kansas City, Missouri, before moving to Hollister in 1994. He attended St. Benedict's College at Atchison Kansas. Mr. McGrath was owner/operator of McGrath Construction in agricultural construction in soil conservation, building and designing waterways, ponds, and terraces. Gerald was a currant member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church of Branson Missouri and a former member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church of Lee's Summit Missouri, St. Mary's Catholic Church of Pittsburg, Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Ottawa and a life member of the Knight's of Columbus. On November 12th, 1935, he was united in marriage with Esda Faye Sink at Ottawa. She survives of their home. They shared nearly 62 years together. Also surviving are two sons, Gary McGrath and his wife, of Pittsburg, James McGrath of Kansas City, Missouri: a daughter, Pat Avery, and her husband. Everett of Kimberling City, Missouri: a brother, Harry McGrath of Compton, Arkansas: six grandchildren, Christopher Avery, Mark Avery, Kathleen McGrath, John McGrath, Matthew McGrath and Sarah McGrath: three great-grandchildren, George Avery, Alison McGrath Andersen and John Avery: three nieces, Jean Floersch, Dolores Richeson and Shelia Phillips: three nephews, Bill McGrath, Michael Stine, H.L. Sink and a sister-in-law, Zella Stine. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents: four brothers, Ed McGrath, Joseph McGrath, Emmett McGrath and George McGrath: two sisters, Frances McGrath and Mary McGrath.
