George Leo Marstall

George L. Marstall passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 20, 2007, at the age of seventy-seven years, surrounded by his family and friends. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 23, 2007, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ottawa. He was born to George H. and Nellie Mae (VanHole) Marstall on March 1, 1930 on a farm near St. Mary's, KS, the oldest of six boys. He was encouraged to make the world a better place during his lifetime. He enlisted in the Army Reserves and served in the Korean War, earning an honorable discharge in 1952 at the rank of Master Sergeant and also earning a Bronze Star and the Combat Infantryman's Badge. He went on to graduate from Emporia State Teacher's College with a degree in Business Administration. He began his long and distinguished career in business at the Chamber of Commerce in Kansas City, Kansas, where he earned the Young Man of the Year Award in1962. When he brought his young family to Ottawa in 1963 as the new manager of Anchor Savings & Loan, one of the first things he did was become a Rotarian. He helped form the Rotary Foundation in 1971 as Rotary was celebrating its 50th anniversary. He served the foundation as either President or Secretary-Treasurer for 20 years. The Rotarians named him a Paul Harris Fellow for his many years of service. He has been active in the community for many years and in many ways, through the United Way, the Ottawa Industrial Development Corporation, the City Commission, Mayor of Ottawa, the Kansas Municipal Energy Agency, and the Kansas Savings and Loan Board. He was honored in 1989 by the Kansas Municipal Energy Agency with the first Fred D. Diehl Award for meritorious service. He served Anchor Savings & Loan for many years as manager and later as Senior Vice-President and Branch Coordinator of 15 offices when the association was sold in 1990. He is survived by his wife, Margaret A. Marstall, of their home; children, Margaret (Peg) Schultz, Ph.D., of Topeka, Kansas, Mary Ekeler, of Wichita, Kansas, Larry Marstall, of Ottawa, Steven Marstall of Cortland, New York, and Patricia Hunninghake of Wichita, Kansas. He had 14 grandchildren. George was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, James Marstall. Surviving brothers are Charles, Norman, Larry, and Kenneth Marstall. Friends may pay their respects to Mr. Marstall at the Dengel & Son Mortuary from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Thursday. A Rosary will be said at Sacred Heart Church on Thursday evening at 6:30 followed by a family visitation from 7:00 to 8:00. Cremation is planned following the Funeral Mass. A private family committal service will be held at a later date at Highland Cemetery in Ottawa. The family suggests memorial contributions to George Marstall Guardian Angel for Education Endowment at Sacred Heart School, c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
