George E. "Shorty" Sanders

George E. “Shorty” Sanders, 82, of Vassar, Kansas, passed away Friday, May 25, 2018 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka. A memorial visitation will be held from 5:30 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. A small memorial will be said at the beginning of the visitation. Shorty was born November 13, 1935, in Laurel, Montana, the son of Lauren and Vida (Blankenship) Sanders. He was born and raised in Laurel, Montana. At the age of ten, Shorty and his family moved to Lyndon, Kansas where he attended school and graduated from Lyndon High School with the class of 1953. Shorty moved to Pomona in 1968 where he and his wife lived for 37 years. They moved to Vassar in 2005. Shorty was united in marriage to Deloras “Dee” Boyer May 12, 1956 in Melvern, Kansas. They enjoyed 62 years of marriage together. Survivors include his wife, Dee of Vassar; two children; Sherry Wiscombe and husband Jay of Pomona, and Jay Sanders of Silver Lake; brother, Dean Sanders of Winchester; six grandchildren, Stephanie Hoffsommer and husband Christian, Brandee Webb and husband Justin, Jayson Wiscombe and wife Amy, Kyle Sanders, Monica Sanders and Mayria Sanders; seven great-grandchildren, Andrew, Lance, Hunter, Gunnar, Easton, Jayden and Jo. Shorty was preceded in death by his father, Lauren Sanders; mother, Vida Rice and husband Elliott; brothers, Alvin and Junior Sanders; and sister, Rose Sanders. He owned his own company where he was a sheetrock finisher, retiring in 1979. Shorty was well known for his story telling and could hold a conversation with just about anybody. For 40 years, he worked the scoreboard for almost all sporting activities in Pomona. Shorty also coached summer baseball for many years. He loved woodworking and made various trinkets for his family and grandchildren. Above all, Shorty enjoyed time spent with his family and grandchildren.
