George Crosby Haas was born on Wednesday, November 1, 1922, in Lawrence, Kansas. He was the son of Joseph Crosby and Mildred (Pickens) Haas. George lived in Lawrence, Tonganoxie, Vinland and Baldwin, Kansas, moving to Ottawa in Franklin County, Kansas, in the 1930's, where he made his home until his death on Tuesday, December 5, 2006, at the age of eighty-four years. He was an expert cabinet maker and furniture refinisher. He began his lifelong career in 1937, at the age of fifteen, and retired in December of 1999. He served in the United States Army from December 26, 1942, to February 8, 1946, during World War II, earning the rank of Corporal. He received medals and citations including Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, EAME Theater Ribbon and Distinguished Unit Badge. He was also awarded citations for marksmanship and was a member of the Kansas National Guard. He was a member of North Baptist Church in Ottawa. George was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, who greatly enjoyed spending time with his family. He also enjoyed playing cards with his friends, whittling, fishing, hunting, and working in his garden. On October 31, 1942, George was united in marriage with Ida Myrtle Diamond in Ottawa. They celebrated sixty-four years of marriage. She survives of their home. He is also survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Pat and Sharon Haas of Ottawa, Kansas, David and Cathy Haas of Richmond, Kansas; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Wes Cook of Ottawa, Kansas; sister, Virginia Cates of Kansas City, Missouri; nine grandchildren, Travis Haas and his wife, Shane, Megan Morris and her husband, Doug, Molly Fortune, Dustin Haas and his wife, Heather, Ethan Mustain, Eric Toumberlin and his wife, Suzanne, Carrie Geist and her husband, Raymond, Dillon Cook and his wife, Kristin, Emily Mills and her husband, Paul; and ten great-grandchildren, Gavin, Dane, Dillon, Devin and Riley Haas, Quincey, Maleah and Randi Morris, Eva Mills, and Emma Toumberlin. Mr. Haas is preceded in death by his parents; five sisters, Marge Cobb, Nell Wilson, Katherine Howe, Mildred Winterschied, Hazel Ogle; and brother, Ted Haas. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from the Dengel & Son Mortuary at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 8, 2006. IN STATE: Friends may pay their respects to Mr. Haas at the Dengel & Son Mortuary after 9:00 a.m. Thursday to the service hour, where the family will meet with friends 7 to 8:00 Thursday evening.
