George A. Papps, 82, of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away Thursday, March 27, 2014. Funeral services will be held at Dengel Son Mortuary, 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, April 2, 2014. Friends may pay their respects to Mr. Papps at Dengel Son Mortuary after 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, to the service hour where the family will meet with friends from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday. Interment Highland Cemetery, Ottawa, with military honors by Ft. Riley Honor Guard and VFW Post 5901. George was born on Tuesday, February 9, 1932 in Osawatomie, Kansas, the son of Peter and Harrietta (Jennings) Papps. He attended Ottawa High School with the class of 1950, later attaining his GED while in the service. George served in the United States Army during the Korean War, attaining the rank of Private. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart and two Korean Bronze Stars. He earned the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal Ribbon, United Nations Service Medal Ribbon and the Combat Infantryman Badge. On July 20, 1952 George was united in marriage with Delores Early in Ottawa. She survives of their home. Survivors also include his two children, Tim Papps of Ottawa and Paula Lintner and husband Bill of Overland Park; five grandchildren, Nic and Corinna Papps and Gabrielle, Justin and Cooper Lintner; brother-in-law, Butch Early and wife Sandy of Wellsville; and close family friend, Bic Cowdin. He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Pete, Chris, Margaret and Harry Papps. He lived in Ottawa since 2010, moving from Garnett, Kansas where he lived for twelve years. From 1977 to 1990 he lived in Los Alamos, New Mexico. He also resided in Carbondale, Kansas and Conroe, Texas. George was a master electrician, working for thirty-eight years with ATT as a systems installer, retiring in the early 1980s. Upon retirement from ATT, George went to work for the Los Alamos National Laboratory. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post 590l; Boy Scouts of America; fourth degree Knights of Columbus member and former Grand Knight of Sacred Heart Parish of Conroe, Texas; The National Rifle Association; Communication Worker of America, Topeka; and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
