Gene Lemoyne Steelman was born July 21, 1925, at Homewood, in Franklin County, Kansas. In 1948, Gene moved to Agricola, Kansas, and to the Garnett, Kansas, area in 1981, where he made his home until his death Monday, February 11, 2002, at the age of seventy-six years. Gene graduated from Williamsburg High School with the class of 1943. He was a lifelong farmer. He was also a part-time truck driver. During the Korean War, Gene served in the United States Army as a mechanic stationed in Iwo Jima and Japan as a Specialist Third Class. Gene liked the outdoors, fishing and working in his garden and yard. He also enjoyed woodworking and going to auctions. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. On August 6, 1976, Gene was united in marriage with Jennie Lawson-Hamm at Burlington, Kansas. She survives of their home. Also, surviving are his stepson, Robert Hamm of Harris, Kansas; three stepdaughters, Karen Brown and her husband, Fred, of Emporia, Kansas, Judy Corbin and her husband, Robert, of Neosho Falls, Kansas, Jackie McDaniel of Jasper, Texas; eleven grandchildren; and, ten great-grandchildren. SERVICES: Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 17, 2002, at Antioch Cemetery, Franklin County, Kansas. Military Honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post #5901, Ottawa. OFFICIATING CLERGY: Rev. Francis Stockton. IN STATE: Mr. Steelman will lie in state at the Dengel & Son Mortuary after 12:00 noon Thursday to the service hour, where the family will meet with friends 7 to 8:00 Saturday evening.
