Gary L. Queen, 87, of Paola, Kansas, passed away Monday, September 30, 2019, at North Point Skilled Nursing Home in Paola. Family will meet with friends from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 4, 2019, at the Dengel & Son Mortuary, 305 N. Pearl St., Paola, KS, 66071 followed by funeral services at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in Woodland Cemetery, Mound City, Kansas. Gary was born Tuesday, November 3, 1931, at home near Prescott, KS, the son of Cleophus Truman and Ruth (Hinton) Queen. He was the oldest of their three sons. He graduated from Mound City High School with the Class of 1949. Gary was united in marriage to Betty and together they had Laura, Gina, Michael, and Steven. In his early years Gary worked as a machinist in metal fabrication. He worked as an HVAC consultant for many years. For the past 20 years, he worked at Paola Price Chopper in a variety of positions, mainly in their receiving department. He loved vegetable gardening, landscaping, fishing, working on home improvement projects, canning and cooking his garden bounty, and was an avid sports fan. He provided home grown tomatoes to numerous family members, friends, and co-workers. The Royals, Jayhawks, and Chiefs were his favorite teams. Many meals were enjoyed with his friends at the Circle C resturant in Paola and Poncho's in Ottawa. Gary was always available to help a friend or neighbor in need. Gary was a widower, he was also preceded in death by his parents, one brother Roscoe Queen, and two daughters Laura Queen and Gina (Queen) Best. Survivors include two sons Steven D. Queen of Paola, KS, and Michael R. Queen of Iola; his brother, Jim Queen of Paola; 3 grandchildren; and several great grandchildren.
