Frances Marceline Brown was born September 15, 1917, at Ottawa, in Franklin County, Kansas. She was the daughter of Mark Thurber and Nettie Marie (Adamson) Rice. A lifelong resident, Frances made her home in Ottawa, until her death Friday, September 19, 2003, at the age of eighty-six years. She graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1935. Frances and her husband owned and operated Brown's Hardware in Ottawa from 1950 until retiring in 1978. Mrs. Brown was a member of First United Methodist Church, Quilter's Guild, Ransom Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and charter member of O.K. Extension Homemaker's Unit, as well as a Brownie Scout leader and a Den Mother for Cub and Boy Scouts, all in Ottawa. Frances was an active, enthusiastic lady who enjoyed all the church activities, and the organizations she was a part of. She enjoyed attending a study group and teaching Sunday School at Trinity United Methodist Church. In her spare time, she enjoyed quilting, painting and traveling. She has created numerous beautiful items for her family and friends to cherish through the years. On October 16, 1939, Frances was united in marriage with Harry E. Brown at Lawrence, Kansas. He survives of their home. She is also survived by two daughters, Jill Ann Reimer and her husband, Don, of Spring Texas, Janice Marie McCarson and her husband, O. M. 'Mac', of Arlington, Texas; son, Fred H. Brown of Branson, Missouri; sister-in-law, Billie Jean VanLeiden and her husband, Tony, of Ottawa; three grandsons, Jeffrey H. Reimer, Todd Edward Reimer, Matthew McCarson; two great-grandsons, Brooks Reimer, Blake Reimer; and, great-granddaughter, Maddison McCarson. She is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Billie Lou Deay. SERVICES: Family and friends will meet for Graveside Services 11:00a.m. Tuesday September 23, 2003 at Highland Cemetery, Ottawa, Kansas. OFFICIATING CLERGY: Rev. Jim Stigall, First United Methodist Church and Rev Jimmy Treat, First Baptist Church. IN STATE: Mrs. Brown will lie in state at the Dengel & Son Mortuary Monday to the service hour where the family will meet with friends 7-8p.m. Monday evening.
