Floyd Massey

Floyd Earl "Bill" Massey, 98, a lifetime resident of Miami County, Kansas died May 8, 2012 at Miami County Medical Center. He was born September 14, 1913 near New Lancaster, Kansas, the son of Earl and Ezamiah Amanda (Beckman) Massey. On December 22, 1939 he married Isabelle Juanita Powell of Louisburg, Kansas. Floyd graduated from Fontana High School, Fontana, Kansas in 1933. He was a farmer until he enlisted in the United States Army in 1944, serving in the Philippines and Japan until his discharge in 1946. After his discharge, Floyd worked for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline in Louisburg, Kansas from 1947 until he took permanent leave-of-absence to become Financial Secretary-Treasurer of Local 5-348 of the Oil, Chemical, and Atomic Workers Union (OCAW) in 1971. He represented District 5 of OCAW on the International Executive Board of the OCAW International Union from 1971-1977 and over the years held several OCAW positions until he retired in 1978. Floyd became a member of the Christian Church of Fontana, in 1930. He later transferred his membership to the First Baptist Church of Paola, where he served 14 years as Financial Secretary and as an usher for many years. In 1944 Floyd became a member of Equity Lodge 131, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Kansas in Fontana, holding many offices over the years. He became a member of Perfection Chapter #21, Order of the Eastern Star, in 1976. He was Worthy Patron 3 times and served as Treasurer and Chaplain many years. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Isabelle Juanita (Powell) Massey of Paola; two sons, Richard and his wife Ann of Severna Park, MD and William and his wife Mary if Wichita, KS; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Margaret Massey and Lola (Massey) Cheek. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Paola.
