Floyd E. "Gene" Ramsey

Gene Ramsey died Sunday, October 22, 2017, in Ottawa, Kansas. He was the son of Floyd Edmond and Ruth (Drake) Ramsey, born October 24, 1929, in Topeka, Kansas. Gene Ramsey and Mary Anne Perkins were married September 10, 1950, in Spearville, Kansas. They recently celebrated their 67th anniversary. Gene worked for newspapers in Dodge City, Kansas; Salida, Colorado; Hutchinson, Kansas; and in Ottawa, before he and Anne purchased the Crawford Tribune in Crawford, Nebraska, in 1963. In 1973, they purchased Tallman Printing and the Ottawa Times, which became Ramsey Printing and home of the Ottawa Times and the Ottawa Times Shopper. The Times and Shopper were sold in 1992, but they have continued to own and operate Ramsey Printing. Gene and Anne became the parents of four children, Marci Gentry of Ottawa, Jo Peterson of Salina, Kent Ramsey and wife Bonnie of Ottawa, and Michael Ramsey, deceased. They have five grandchildren, Christopher Gentry of Green Bay, Wisconsin, Kimberly Miller of McFarland, Trisha Everhart of Ottawa, Ryan Peterson of Salina, and Megan Grizzell of Olathe; and seven great-grandchildren, Austin Miller, Adam Miller and Aden Miller all of McFarland, Jack Gentry and Olivia Gentry of Green Bay, Wisconsin, Delila Peterson of Salina, and Maddux Grizzell of Olathe; two nieces, Allyson Wilson of Pembroke Pines, Florida and Rosemary Perkins of Denver, Colorado; and nephew Gary Perkins of Wichita. Gene coached Little League and American Legion baseball and his favorite activity was attending school and sporting events of his family. A five-time Mayor of Ottawa, he served nearly 20 years on the City Commission and served several years on the National League of Cities Small Cities Committee. Other memberships included the Ottawa Masonic Lodge No. 18, Union Chapter 15 Order of the Eastern Star and Westminster Presbyterian Church. A private inurnment will be held at Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Family will meet with friends from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M., Tuesday, October 24, at the Westminster Presbyterian Church to celebrate Gene’s life and 88th birthday.
