Floyd Benjamin Elliott, Jr., 90, formerly of Pomona, Kansas passed away Thursday, May 1, 2014, at Ottawa Retirement Village.Funeral services will be held at Dengel Son Mortuary, 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, May 7, 2014.Friends may pay their respects to Mr. Elliott at the mortuary after 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, to the service hour where the family will meet with friends from 6:30 to 7:30 P.M. Tuesday.Interment Central Cemetery, rural Pomona, Kansas.Floyd was born on Tuesday, November 6, 1923 in Parkville, Missouri, the son of Floyd Benjamin Sr. and Lillian (Newkirk) Elliott.Floyd lived in Kansas City, Kansas, as a young man until 1957, moving to Shawnee, Kansas, from 1957 to 1971; Pomona, Kansas, from 1971 to 2010; and Ottawa, Kansas, from 2010 until his death.He attended Argentine High School, in Kansas City, Kansas; later received an honorary diploma from J.C. Harmon High School in Kansas City; and attended Kansas City Bible College.On October 25, 1945 Floyd was united in marriage with Josephine Jodi Marie McCane in Olathe, Kansas. She survives of their home. Survivors also include his three daughters, Connie Hoyt and husband Darrel of Pomona; Joyce Sheffield and husband Ron of Gardner; and Pam Miller and husband Gary also of Gardner; six grandchildren, Melissa Hatfield and husband Scott, Michael Hoyt and wife Priscilla, Angela Meinke and husband Paul, Christopher Miller, Josh Sheffield and Meghan Miller; eight great-grandchildren, Ethan, Nicholas and Bryce Hatfield, Mya and Jackson Meinke, and Nathaniel, Lyndsey and Elliana Hoyt; three sisters, Beverly Zirkle and husband David of Topeka; Martha Jones of Kansas City, Kansas; and Claudia Plunkett and husband Jim of Kansas City, Missouri; and many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters, Marguerite Smith, Dolores Behrends and Joan Behrends. Floyd worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, as a telephone lineman, repairman, installer and switchman, from 1946 to 1986, retiring after forty years of service.Floyd served in the United States Navy during World War II, from April 1941 to October 1945. He served in the Pacific Theater of Operations as a Gunners Mate First Class.He was an ordained deacon and most recently a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Ottawa, former member of the Greenwood Township Board and Franklin County Board of Zoning Appeal.Floyd was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, whose greatest joy was spending time with his family. Along with attending church and his deep love and service for the Lord, he enjoyed country living on his farm where he cared for his cattle. In retirement, he spent much of his time patiently taking Jodi from store to store, as he said, watching the parking lot change many times over!
