Fern M. Lee, 96, Richmond, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at Richmond Healthcare and Rehabilitation. Funeral services are planned for 10 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2014, at Dengel & Son Mortuary, Ottawa. Friends may pay their respects to Mrs. Lee 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 21, 2014, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary, where family members plan to meet with friends 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Interment is set for Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Fern was born Wednesday, Dec. 12, 1917, in Lane, Kansas, the daughter of Ansel Henry and Jessie Ida (Doman) Hills. She was a lifelong Franklin County resident, living most of her life in Ottawa. She graduated from Lane High School with the class of 1935. Fern was united in marriage with Richard Lee Nov. 17, 1957, in Ottawa. He preceded her in death Oct. 5, 2002. She also was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Cleo Hills; and two sisters, Jean Lash and Doris Summers. Survivors include her siblings, Elaine Dyer and husband, Dale, Ottawa; Dorothy Chrisjohn, Lane, and Lloyd Hills and wife, Norma, Ottawa; and many nieces and nephews. Fern worked as a seamstress for Mode O Day and Ottawa Tent & Awing in the 1940s, and as a bookkeeper for 22 years for the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service in the 1950s and 1960s. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed traveling, country music, watching the “Lawrence Welk Show” and soap operas, and animals, especially her niece’s dog Sam. Fern will be remembered as a kind and caring person who loved, supported and cared for her family throughout her life. She will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her.
