Eva May Holmes

Eva May Holmes was born May 22, 1909, in New York, New York, the daughter of Andreas Pearson and Anna (Malmsten) Cronquist. Eva lived in New York City from 1909 to 1911; Topeka, Kansas, 1911 to 1949; Oskaloosa, Kansas, 1949 to 1962; and, Kansas City, Missouri, 1962 to 1997. In 1997, she moved to Ottawa, in Franklin County, Kansas, where she made her home until her death Thursday, September 4, 2003, at the age of ninety-four years. She attended schools in Topeka including secretarial school. For twenty years, Eva was employed as a typist for the Federal Government, retiring in 1971. Mrs. Holmes was a lovely lady who greatly cared about others. She was a devoted daughter and wife, who cared for her mother, sister, and brother, in their time of need. In Eva's younger years, she enjoyed bowling. She also enjoyed reading and was quite talented in creating craft items. On June 22, 1935, Eva was united in marriage with John R. Holmes at Kansas City, Missouri. He preceded her in death on November 10, 1962. She is also preceded in death by her father in 1942, mother, 1967; maternal grandparents, August Herman and Maria (Petterson) Malmsten, 1902 paternal grandparents, P'r and Metta (Martensdotter) Nilsson, 1896; maternal great-grandmother, Katarina (Malmgren) Malmsten.three sisters, Anna Maria Martha Fowler, 1986, Karin Bengtsson, 1999, Ellen A. Davis, 1992; and brother, John A. Cronquist in 1989. Eva is survived by four nieces, Phyllis Fowler-Birzer of Ottawa, Kansas, Dorothy Turrentine-Fowler of Topeka, Kansas, Barbro Cederstam-Stenberg of Sweden, and Agneta Christenson of Sweden. SERVICES: Graveside services will be held at Rochester Cemetery in Topeka, 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 8, 2003. OFFICIATING CLERGY: Brian Hardee, Rock Creek Bible Church, Meriden, Kansas. IN STATE: Mrs. Holmes will lie in state at the Dengel & Son Mortuary after 5:00 p.m. Saturday to the service hour. CEMETERY: Rochester Cemetery, 1200 NW Menninger Rd., Topeka, Kansas. MEMORIALS: The family suggests memorials to Southern Care Hospice of Lawrence, c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
