Ethel Lorrane Hastings was born November 18, 1915, at Herington, Kansas. She was the daughter of Joseph B. and Sara Jane (Conklin) Layton. Ethel moved from Council Grove, Kansas to Ottawa where she lived most of her life. In 1990, she moved to the Kansas City, Missouri area, and to Lee's Summit, Missouri in 1999, where she made her home until her death Sunday, February 10, 2002, at the age of eighty-six years. Ethel was a homemaker and over the years worked as a phone dispatcher for A-1 Cab and Reliable Cab companies, did babysitting in her home for a number of years, worked at Ottawa University for a year cleaning Centennial Hall, worked at the House of Douglas, did house cleaning in Ottawa for a number of years, and, for about ten years, cared for the elderly in their homes before retiring in March of 1990. She attended the Nazarene Church while living in Ottawa. She enjoyed watching T.V. while crocheting and embroidering many lovely keepsakes. She also enjoyed traveling and shopping. Most of all, she enjoyed her family and loved to read books to her grandchildren. On June 28, 1933, Ethel was united in marriage with Roy Samuel Hastings at Ottawa. He preceded her in death on January 17, 1966. She is also preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Lola Edgerton, May Melia; two infant brothers, Luther Layton, Earl Layton; and, half-brother, Billy Layton. Mrs. Hastings is survived by two sons, Jimmy E. Hastings and his wife, Nancy, of Desert Hot Springs, California, Tommy D. Hastings and his wife, Frances, of Ottawa; two daughters, Donna Grady and her husband, George, of Kansas City, Missouri, Marsha K. Hedges and her husband, Martin, of Kansas City, Missouri; eight grandchildren; and, twelve great-grandchildren. Services: Funeral services will be held from the Dengel & Son Mortuary 2:00 PM Friday, February 15, 2002 Officiating Clergy: Pastor Bill Erickson. In State: Mrs. Hastings will lie in state after 12:00 noon on Wednesday at Dengel & Son Mortuary to service hour, where the family will meet with friends Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:00.
