Emory William Deaton

September 23, 1911 — April 1, 2003

Emory William Deaton was born September 23, 1911, in a log house on a farm west of Leduc Alberta, Canada. He was the son of Oscar and Rosa (Kelly) Deaton. Emory spent his early childhood growing up in the wilderness area of Canada. In 1926, at the age of fifteen, he moved with his family to a farm northwest of Ottawa. On April 3, 1998, they moved into the city of Ottawa, and to Richmond, in Franklin County, Kansas, in early 2003, where he made his home until his death Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at the age of ninety-one years. He attended rural schools, including Liberty Rural School near Centropolis. On October 4, 1951, Emory was united in marriage with Edith May Mathias in rural Ottawa. She survives of Richmond. He was a long time member of Centropolis Baptist Church and charter member of the Ottawa Cooperative Association. He was a self-employed farmer for forty years, hauling milk to Bennett's Creamery in Ottawa, from about 1930 until about 1970. Emory never knew a stranger. In the years when he was a young man, he traveled with a friend to area communities putting on plays. He was an extremely active person who enjoyed so many things including traveling, pitching horseshoes, and going on picnics and to fairs. In fact, he was still exercising and walking close to a mile every day into his late eighties. Emory cared deeply for his wife and nieces and nephews and especially loved the days everyone would go to his and Aunt Edith's farm for a family get-together and dinner. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Rosa Deaton, and sister, Katie Goodman. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from Dengel & Son Mortuary 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 4, 2003.
