Emma Gertrude Johnson

Emma Gertrude Johnson, 97, of Pomona, Kansas, passed away Thursday, February 12, 2015, at Brookside Manor Retirement Community. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, February 17, 2015, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Family will meet with friends prior to services from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, at the mortuary. Interment Woodlawn Cemetery, Pomona, Kansas. Emma Gertrude was born Tuesday, July 17, 1917, in Newton, Kansas, the daughter of Roy Emmit and Emma Gertrude (Ragland) Warhurst. She grew up and attended school in the Newton area before moving to Franklin County in the early 1940’s. Emma Gertrude was united in marriage, for sixty-five years, with Norris W. Johnson January 18, 1934, in Hutchinson, Kansas. He preceded her in death February 17, 1999. She was also preceded in death by her son, Norris Duane Johnson; daughter, Barbara Stephens; her parents; four brothers, Roy, Harold, Oscar and Dean Warhurst; sister, Lola Gordon; and grandson-in-law, Ron McDaniel. Survivors include her sister, Ruth Ulrich of Udall, Kansas; daughter-in-law, Kay Johnson of Council Grove; son-in-law, Jerry Stephens of Wichita; six grandchildren, Gary Thompson II and wife Bonnie, Edward Thompson and wife Penny, Susan Cassity, Steven Johnson and wife Arlene, Mary McDaniel, and Tim Johnson; twelve great grandchildren, Jami Thompson, Jessica Flatin, Brian Thompson, Renee Freund, Jordan Johnson, Aerial Byrd, Benjamin Johnson, Lindsey McDaniel, Nolan Thompson, Andrew McDaniel, Jodi Johnson, and Kevin Thompson; and nine great-great grandchildren. Emma Gertrude worked during World War II and the Korean War for the DeSoto Sunflower Ordinance Plant, helped her husband on the farm, and for twenty-one years worked, as a seamstress, for Mode O Day Garment Factory in Ottawa. She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Newton and after moving to Franklin County she became a member of Appanoose Baptist Church. Emma Gertrude liked to crochet, play cards, make quilts, cook, and watch her great grandkids’ ball games. She took painting lessons from Marian Turner and enjoyed painting pictures and ducks her husband made. Her loss is felt by all who knew and loved her. She will be greatly missed.
