Elvis McGowen, 68, Ottawa, died Saturday Jan. 20, 2007, at Ransom Memorial Hospital, Ottawa. He was born May 12, 1938, at Poplar Bluff, Mo., to Raleigh and Vada (Humphrey) McGowen. He lived in Ottawa since 1985. He had previously lived in Miami, Oklahoma; Picher, Oklahoma; and Cardin, Oklahoma. Elvis attended schools in Picher, Oklahoma. He worked on the road crew for the Paola substation of the Kansas Department of Transportation, retiring in 2003. He previously worked at Fashion, Inc. in Ottawa for eight years, as a welder at Wolf Creek Nuclear Power Plant, and in construction. Elvis served in the United States Army from 1961 to 1963, attaining the rank of Pvt. lst Class. He was awarded commendations and citations including Expert (Flame Thrower), Army of Occupation Medal (Berlin), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Sharpshooter Rifle M14). He was a member of North Baptist Church in Ottawa. On June 29, 2002, Elvis was united in marriage with Bonnie McCoy in Ottawa, Kansas. She survives of their home.
