Elmo Lee Shepherd

June 22, 1918 — January 16, 2008

Elmo Lee Shepherd, Sr. was born on Saturday, June 22, 1918, in North Garden, Virginia. He was the son of John Elsom and Edna Marie (Coleman) Shepherd. Elmo lived in Lane, Kansas most of his life, moving to Ottawa, in Franklin County, Kansas in 1941, where he made his home until his death on Wednesday, January 16, 2008, at the age of eighty-nine years. Elmo graduated from Lane High School with the class of 1937. He was employed as a foreman for Kansas Gas Service Co. thirty-five years. He served in the United States Navy during World War II aboard the Aircraft Carrier Bunker Hill as an Ammunition Specialist attaining the rank of Seaman First Class. His tour of duty included the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the Gas Service Retiree's Club and former member of Ottawa Lodge #18, Ancient Free & Accepted Masons. Elmo was a wonderful father and grandfather who greatly enjoyed his family and watching his children and grandchildren play baseball. He enjoyed playing baseball, as well, and participating in other sports. His favorite pastime was working on, and driving, his car. On March 24, 1940, Elmo was united in marriage with Charlene Bump in Paola, Kansas, they shared nearly 68 years of marriage. She survives of their home. He is also survived by two sons, Elmo Shepherd, Jr. and his wife, Judy, of Lawrence, Kansas, Charles T. Shepherd and his wife, Elizabeth, of Kannapolis, North Carolina; four grandchildren, Melissa Henley of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Randy Shepherd and his wife, Michelle, of St. Petersburg, Florida, Barry Shepherd and his wife, Tiffany, of Mission, Kansas, Mark Shepherd and his wife, Christina, of Eudora, Kansas; and ten great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and four brothers. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from Dengel & Son Mortuary at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 21, 2008. IN STATE: Friends may pay their respects to Mr. Shepherd at Dengel & Son Mortuary after 1:00 p.m. Saturday to the service hour, where the family will meet with friends 4 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday. CEMETERY: Lane Cemetery, Lane, Kansas.
