Louis Elmer Flake, age 93, of Paola, Kansas died August 23, 2017 at North Point Skilled Nursing Home, Paola, Kansas. Elmer, as he was known, was born February 9, 1924 at rural Paola, Kansas in the Block Community. He was the son of Louis John and Louise Marie (Alpert) Flake. He grew up in the Block Community attending Debrick School in Block and Fontana High School. He was united in marriage to Doris M. Allman on September 1, 1946. They made their home in Paola and became the parents of Lillian and Joe. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1951. When he returned home he worked at several occupations and eventually began his career at KCPL. He retired from KCPL in March of 1985. His church membership was with the First Lutheran Church in Paola, where he served in numerous offices. Elmer was known for his excellent craftsmanship in woodworking. He loved working on his farm, spending countless hours with his garden and fruit trees. His devotion to his church was evident with all the positions he had held in the church and volunteering whenever needed. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and his brother James. He is survived by his daughter Lillian (Thomas) Heuer of Watertown, WI; his son Joe (Cathy) Flake of Paola; 6 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
