Ellen Matilda Likes was born September 23, 1909, in Centropolis, Kansas. She was the daughter of Lee Onnie and Theodosia Ernest (Bousman) Oyler. She was a lifelong Franklin County, Kansas resident. She was raised in the Centropolis Community, moving to Ottawa in 1928, where she made her home until her death Saturday, June 1, 2002, at the age of ninety-two years. She attended schools in the Centropolis area. For twenty-five years, Ellen was employed by C.O.F. Training Services, Inc., Ottawa, as a resident manager, retiring in 1995. From 1952 to 1970, Mrs. Likes was employed as a seamstress for Mode 'O Day in Ottawa. Mrs. Likes was a member of the Mother and Daughter Club of Centropolis and Aerie Lodge #2700, Fraternal Order of Eagles Ladies Auxiliary, Ottawa. She attended Community Foursquare Church in Ottawa. Mrs. Likes was a woman who worked hard. She enjoyed working in her yard and was an excellent seamstress. Her greatest enjoyment, however, came from spending time with her family. On August 19, 1927, Ellen was united in marriage with Charles Leonard (Jack) Likes at Kansas City, Kansas. He preceded her in death on June 27, 1978. She is survived by her daughter, Betty J. Teter, of Ottawa; three grandsons, David Lee Likes, of Ottawa, Charles Noel Likes, of Ottawa, Randel Wayne Pendleton, of Ottawa; five granddaughters, Lucinda Dell Egidy, of Olathe, Sheryl Lynn Likes, of Ottawa, Lisa Gaye Mersman, of Garnett, Linda Kay Whetzell, Sandra Ellen Glenn, of Ottawa; eighteen great-grandchildren; and, two great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Max David Likes, Lee Craig Likes; four sisters, Stella Lee Edwards, Nora Ernestine Hosler, Nancy Mary Lavonia Dinsmore, Verlie Alice Fisher; two brothers, Lorenzo Orren Oyler, Irvin Frank Oyler; and, two grandsons, William Ray Likes and Rickey Dean Likes. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from the Dengel & Son Mortuary 10:00am, Tuesday, June 4, 2002. OFFICIATING CLERGY: Pastor Herb Eplee IN STATE: Mrs. Likes will lie in state at the Dengel & Son Mortuary after 5:00pm Sunday to the service hour where the family will meet with friends 7-8 Monday evening.
