Ellen C. Hickman, age 104 of Ottawa, Kansas, died Monday, January 7, 2013 at Ottawa Retirement Village. She was born on Saturday, November 14, 1908 in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Aloysious and Agnes (Levell) Oestreicher. She has been a resident of Ottawa since 1946, moving from Princeton, Kansas. Ellen graduated from Princeton High School with the class of 1927 and graduated from nurse’s training at St. Mary’s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri in 1930. She worked as a nurse, in hospitals, private nursing and then as a school nurse from age fifty-five until retiring at the age of sixty-five. During her retirement she was employed as a nurse at Cedar House and Crestview Nursing Homes in Ottawa. Ellen was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Ottawa Women’s Bowling Association where she had the highest bowling average from 1949 to 1954. She was an avid flower gardener, fisherman and card player. On Saturday, August 13, 1932, Ellen was united in marriage with John S. Hickman at Kansas City, Missouri. He preceded her in death on November 12, 1980. She is also preceded in death by her: Parents – Aloysious and Agnes Oestreicher; Sister – Georgia Berry; Sister – Barbara Isaeff and Brother – Grover Oestreicher. She is survived by her: Daughter – Barbara Carpenter and husband Bob of Gardner, Kansas; Daughter – Patricia Harris and husband Chuck of Huntington Beach, California; Son – Tom Hickman and wife Barb of Ottawa, Kansas; Grandchildren – Six and Great-grandchildren - Five. SERVICE: Cremation is planned with Graveside Services and Inurnment at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Ottawa, 10:30 A.M. Friday, January 11, 2013.
