Edward Eldon “Ed” Henley, 75, of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away Friday, September 19, 2014, at Ransom Memorial Hospital with his family by his side. Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, October 4, 2014, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Family will meet with friends following the service. Ed was born Monday, July 31, 1939 in Baldwin City, Kansas, the son of Eldon C. and Katherine (Rhine) Henley. He had lived in Ottawa since the late 1950’s. He also lived in Michigan. He attended Ottawa High School and later went on to receive his GED while in the service. He served in the United States Air Force for eight years, as a jet engine mechanic, from September 16, 1958 to September 15, 1966, attaining the rank of Airman 1st Class. Survivors include his companion, Wanda Brumit of the home; two sons, Ed Henley Jr. of Mason, Michigan, and Christopher Henley of Michigan; three stepsons, Nevil Gumm, Virgil Gumm and wife Kathy, and Fred Gumm and companion Lindy all of Ottawa; four stepdaughters, Connie Stauffer and husband Gary of Overland Park, Peggy Cramer of Ottawa, Cindy Loder and husband Bill of Topeka, and Tina Morton and husband Steve of Washington; three brothers, Jerry Henley and wife Norma of Lawrence, Bob Henley and wife Debbie of Olathe, Colorado, and Don Banker and wife Donna of Granbury, Texas; three grandchildren, Edward and Hailey Henley of Michigan, and Mary Wilkinson of Durand, Michigan; and one great-granddaughter, Cadence Wilkinson of Durand, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Sylvia Bell Smithey-Henley; sister, Dorothy Taylor; two stepsons, Kelly Gumm and Brian Gilborn; stepbrother, Jerry Gene Smithey; and stepsister, Janice Smithey-Foster. Ed worked as a handyman throughout his life. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, woodworking and gardening. He was an avid fisherman and also loved to draw.
