Edward L. “Ed” Carpenter, 56, of Ottawa, Kansas passed away Thursday, October 3, 2013 after a nine year battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease. A Funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Ottawa, 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, October 8, 2013. Friends may pay their respects to Mr. Carpenter at Dengel & Son Mortuary after 9:00 A.M. Monday, October 7, 2013. A Rosary will be said at 6:30 Monday evening, followed by a family and friends visitation at 7:00 P.M. Interment Mt. Calvary, Ottawa, Kansas. Ed was born on Saturday, August 3, 1957 in Ottawa, Kansas, the son of Clarence “Buss” and Lucille (McManus) Carpenter. He was a lifelong resident of Ottawa, graduating from Ottawa High School with the class of 1975. After graduation Ed enlisted into the Kansas Army National Guard June 17, 1975 and received an Honorable Discharge on April 11, 1981. Ed worked for Killough Quarries from 1981 to 1985 living at the family farm. He then moved to Houston, Texas and worked as a heavy equipment operator from 1985 to 1989. Ed came back to the family farm due to parents’ illnesses and started working for Killough Construction from 1989 to 1993, retiring due to his health. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Survivors include three brothers, David Carpenter and wife Carolyn of St. George, Kansas, James Carpenter and wife Deb of Lawrence, and William Carpenter and wife Bonna of Ottawa; nephews, Lucas and Trevor Carpenter; nieces, Cassie and Taylor Carpenter. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Teresa Ann Carpenter. The family suggests memorial contributions to Mt. Calvary Cemetery c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S.
