Edith Rose Harvey

Edith Harvey Edith Rose Fort Harvey passed away peacefully in her sleep Monday, May 18, 2009 at the Life Care Center in Osawatomie, Ks. She was born Feb. 1, 1925 to Arthur Clement and Emma Grace Smith Fort on a farm four miles north of La Cygne. Two years later the family moved east of Paola and remained in that area. She had many happy childhood memories of attending Davenport School, of her teachers Miss Tina Vohs and Wilma Homrighausen, and also of a happy childhood in a large and loving family. After school Edith along with sisters Katherine, Helen, and best friend and neighbor Fern Homrighausen moved to Paola to work. She worked at a laundry, the Bowry Diner and Braemoor sewing factory. On May 20, 1944 she was married to Fred Harvey and moved to a farm in the Cadmus community, where they lived for 32 years and became the parents of three children. Their marriage ended in divorce. After her kids were grown Edith worked for Prairie View High School as a cook for several years until she retired due to heart problems. She was an avid Parker High School basketball and Parker baseball fan. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, her strawberries and her cattle. She especially enjoyed and loved her kids and grandkids. She was a very loving and devoted mother who will greatly missed by her family. She was baptized and excepted Christ as her Savior in April of 2001. She was preceded in death by her son John E. Harvey and grandson John D. "Little John" Harvey. Also preceding her were her parents, brothers Clement "Bud" Fort who was a casualty of World War II, Harvey, Richard and Billie, sisters Thelma Hewitt, Katherine Conner, Helen Houston. Nieces Teresa Fort and Connie Ray and nephews Jerry Fort and Ronnie Conner and long time best friend and companion Clarence ( Junior) Beer. Surviving are daughter Janet Hetzer and grandchildren Amy Hetzer, Amanda Reed, Ashley Winfrey and William Winfrey all of Haysville, Ks. Daughter Donna Cushing and grandchildren Kelli Wolken and her husband Jim of Greeley, Ks. and Michael Cushing, La Cygne. Ks., ten great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Hazel and Sam Lile, Greeley, Ks. and Betty and Damon Oberhiede, Paola. Sister-in-law and lifetime friend Fern Fort, Paola, sisters-in-law Lorene Fort, Paola, Ks and Linda Fort, Prescott, Ks. Also "Little John"s" mother Ophelia Lambert, Glenwood Arkansas. Services will be held at 1:00 pm, Friday, May22nd at the Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home (Wilson and Sons) 305 N. Pearl, Paola, Ks. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Elm Grove Cemetery 2 miles north of Cadmus.
