Edith May Deaton was born October 30, 1910, in Princeton, Kansas. She was the daughter of David Leander and Ada Mary (Kennedy) Mathias. A lifelong resident, Edith made her home in Franklin County, Kansas, until her death Monday, June 23, 2003, at the age of ninety-two years. She attended rural schools. Edith was a lifelong homemaker. She was a member of Centroplis Baptist Church and attended the Jolly 60's. Edith was an outgoing, loving person who greatly enjoyed time with her family. She was an excellent cook. Two of her specialties were angel food cake and potato salad, which everyone looked forward to at family functions. She liked to do embroidery and made many tea towels for wedding gifts. Edith also liked the outdoors and loved working in her flower gardens. On October 14, 1951, Edith was united in marriage with Emory William Deaton in rural Ottawa. He preceded her in death on April 1, 2003. She is also preceded in death by her parents, David and Mary Mathias, and, brother, John Mathias. She is survived by three sisters, Ruth E. Rathjen and Mildred A. Brown, both of Princeton, Kansas, Nellie M. Carey of Kansas City, Kansas; brother, Alfred Mathias of Tecumseh, Kansas; and, many nieces and nephews. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from Dengel & Son Mortuary 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2003. OFFICIATING CLERGY: Pastor Rick Randall. IN STATE: Mrs. Deaton will lie in state after 9:00 a.m. Tuesday at Dengel & Son Mortuary to service hour, where the family will meet with friends 7 to 8:00 Tuesday evening.
