Edith “Maxine” Pollom, 95, of Lawrence, Kansas, formerly of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away Thursday, October 13, 2022, at Arbor Court at Alvamar in Lawrence where she has resided the past 5 years.

A private family service was held at Dengel & Son Mortuary, Ottawa.

Interment Denison Cemetery, Denison, Kansas.

Maxine was born on September 29, 1927, in Netawaka, Kansas, the daughter of John William and Dorothy Askew (Myers) Monaghan.

She grew up in the Whiting and Netawaka area and graduated from Whiting High School with the class of 1945. She completed her nurse’s training at Christ’s Hospital, now Stormont Vail Hospital, in 1948. She graduated from Ottawa University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1977.

Maxine was a member of the Cadet Nursing Corps from 1945 through 1948 and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Work and Fun Extension Homemaker Unit and former member of the Ransom Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, all in Ottawa.

On August 5, 1949, Maxine was united in marriage to Lewis Raymond Pollom at Topeka, Kansas. He preceded her in death on May 29, 2000.

Maxine was a registered nurse, working first at Winter General VA Hospital in Topeka and then over thirty-five years at Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa, retiring in September 1992. She continued to work part-time as a PRN a few days a month.

She loved her family and enjoyed the time she spent with them. She loved to walk and be outdoors. Her free time was spent doing word search books and putting puzzles together. She also enjoyed her Arbor Court family.

She was also preceded in death by her parents John and Dorothy Monaghan; brothers, John, Carol, Wayne and Daryl Monaghan and sisters, Eudene Behrnes and Illene Merz.

Maxine is survived by her sons, Edwin Pollom and his wife, Rita of Silver Lake, Kansas, and Doyle Pollom and his wife, Pam of Meriden, Kansas; daughters, Shirley Brandt and her husband, Bob of Lawrence, Kansas and Kathy Dehn and her husband, Roger of Topeka, Kansas. Survivors also include a brother Dale Monaghan and his wife, Lorna of Topeka, and sisters-in-law, Elsie Monaghan of Hiawatha, Kansas, Dorothy Monaghan of Lawrence, and Betty Pollom of Henderson, Colorado. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
